After the massacre at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, many Republicans offered their “thoughts and prayers,” as they do after nearly every mass shooting.

Considering mass shootings occur in the U.S. at an astounding frequency, it seems as though Republicans are constantly praying. However, they never clarify their intentions behind their prayers. To whom are they praying? For what are they praying? Many religious people often say prayer alone isn’t enough; there needs to be action taken for the prayer to come to fruition. If that’s so, why do Republicans seem disinterested in discussing common-sense solutions like gun control?

Many criticize Republicans who offer their thoughts and prayers, claiming their thoughts and prayers do nothing. However, considering that mass shootings have become commonplace in U.S. society, perhaps Republicans’ prayers are being answered. Also, considering the idea that prayer requires action, and non-action is an action in regard to mass shootings, maybe Republicans are working towards the desired outcome of their prayers. Seeing how they act when mass shootings occur, what other conclusion could there be besides they want them to continue happening?

If that’s the case, to whom are they praying? What sort of god would answer prayers for…
